DUBLIN (Reuters) – The Air Lease Corporation (NYSE) Corp Executive Chairman stated Monday that Boeing’s (NYSE) delayed 777X widebody jet program may be at risk because of regulatory delays and problems.

According to the U.S. planemaker, it delayed delivery of its largest twin-engine passenger aircraft until 2025 due to certification delays and other issues.

When asked if there were any risks for the program from delays that leave the original 2020 goal five years behind, Steven Udvar Hazy, Executive Chairman of Air Lease, answered the question at the Airline Economics conference: “Yes”.

The aircraft leasing veteran answered the question “Is it possible” that the entire program might be cancelled. He said the answer would depend on the state of the Boeing board in the 18-24 month period.

Udvar Hazy stated that he meant to say, “That decision whether or not the program should be continued will likely not be made by the board of directors.”
