Inflation outlook for consumers falls from record, Fed survey shows

According to a Federal Reserve survey, consumers are more optimistic about inflation, but they continue to expect spending significantly higher in the coming year. This was shown in Monday’s Federal Reserve survey.

According to data from June 2013, inflation expectations for the following year dropped to 6.3%. This is a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from March’s record-breaking high. Three-year expectations increased by 0.2 percentage points to 3.9%. This is still 0.3 percentage points below the record.

The Fed responded to price increases by raising benchmark interest rates last week by half percent. It was the highest increase in benchmark rates for 22 years and only the second rise of the year.

The respondents also felt more secure about their job, only 10.8% of them expecting to lose employment in the next twelve months. This is tied for an all time low.

The expectation for house prices remained unchanged. However, the expected 6% increase in home prices is higher than the long term average.
