WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Tuesday, voters in Republican-leaning Nebraskan and West Virginia vote to elect candidates for U.S. Congress. Other races include state elections. The multiple matchups will again challenge former President Donald Trump’s popularity with voters.

These primaries are part of an ongoing series that sets the stage for November 8 elections, in which Republicans will be favored to win at least one congressional chamber. That would grant them the ability to stop the legislative agenda of Democratic President Joe Biden.

Trump has supported more than 150 candidates in this year’s election as he prepares for the 2024 presidential campaign. Vance won the Republican nomination in Ohio for U.S. Senate. He will also be supporting in prominent Senate primaries in North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania this month.

Trump supported Charles Herbster, Nebraska’s business executive in the race for governor. This despite several women accusing him of sexual harassment. He denies these accusations. Herbster is facing Jim Pillen. Pillen is a Midwestern farmer who also serves on the University Board.

Trump supported Representative Alex Mooney in West Virginia over Representative David McKinley. McKinley is a centrist and has been backed by Governor Jim Justice.

McKinley was one 13 House Republicans that voted in support of Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill, which will bring billions of dollars to low-income countries.

Two incumbents are pitted against one another in this unusual race, since the state has lost a seat to Congress due to shrinking populations. In November, the winner of the primary election will likely win re-election. This new district covers the north half of the state.

The race for retiring Republican Governor Pete Ricketts’ seat in Nebraska revolved around allegations that Herbster had groped several women over recent years. Herbster denies the allegations and has brought a defamation suit against Julie Slama (state senator). Slama filed countersuit alleging battery.

Trump also faces numerous accusations of sexual assault and harassment. He stated at a May 1, rally that he believes Herbster was innocent.

Trump encouraged his supporters at the rally to vote against Republican Representative Don Bacon. Bacon has criticised Trump’s involvement in the attack on U.S. Capitol Jan 6, 2021.

Trump stated that he supported Steve Kuehl as his challenger. A contest for the Omaha-based primary election will see the winner against Alisha shelton or Tony Vargas, who are both Democratic nominees.

In Nebraska, Republican voters will elect a candidate to replace Jeff Fortenberry (ex-Representative), who was convicted in March of lying about campaign donations to the federal investigation.

Mike Flood, a state senator from Minnesota is expected to win the contest. This would allow him to be in contention for victory in November’s Republican-dominated district. Flood already has the Republican endorsement to run in a special election on June 28, which will fill Fortenberry’s seat until January 2023.
