WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Tuesday, former Defense Secretary Mark Esper declared that he will not vote for Donald Trump if he is elected again as Republican president. Esper claimed Trump lacks integrity. He would never put his personal interests above the United States.

Esper answered MSNBC’s question about whether he would vote in Trump 2024. This made Esper one of the first Trump Cabinet members who openly rejected their bosses for a second White House bid.

An elected official must meet a few basic requirements: He or she should be able put the country above their own interests. A certain amount of integrity and principle are essential. They should be able and willing to work across party lines and to unite America. He said that Donald Trump does not meet these requirements.

The former defense chief instead urged his party to seek new leadership before the midterm congressional elections in Novem and 2024’s presidential election.

Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden his re-election bid in 2020. He hasn’t declared his candidacy, but repeatedly stated that his supporters would be happy.

Trump will face multiple investigations regarding his business dealings and handling of classified information. He also faces questions about his participation in the supporters’ attack against the U.S. Capitol in order to prevent Biden’s victory.

Others Republicans including Trump’s ex-Attorney General Bill Barr, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell – who both have drawn Trump’s fury – said that they will back their party’s nominee for president in 2024, even if it’s Trump.

Barr’s book, Esper is also selling, details Esper’s time during the Trump Administration. Esper has also called Trump a threat for democracy in media interviews. Trump called Esper weak and ineffective in his response.
