(Reuters) – Meta Platforms Inc., parent of Facebook, and AMD chipmaker announced Wednesday that they are partnering to create a mobile internet infrastructure program. This would lower base station cost, making broadband easier for everyone.

Evenstar was launched in 2020 by Meta. It promotes OpenRan, which allows cellular network operators mix and match software and hardware to build base stations.

It gives operators more freedom and lowers equipment prices, according to Gilles Garcia, an executive from AMD’s communication and data center group.

They have an aggressive cost target because Meta also wants to pay for the undeveloped regions and countries. Garcia explained that the goal is to connect more people.

AMD announced that its radio chip, Xilinx, (NASDAQ: Zynq UltraScale RFSoC), will be used by the Evenstar radios.
