TOKYO (Reuters – JERA Japan, Japan’s most powerful power generator said Friday that it would buy the entire stake in Stonepeak Investments, which owns two American thermal power stations, each with a capacity of 1.63 gigawatts. The purchase price is not disclosed.

JERA stated that the plants include the Canal thermal power plant in Massachusetts and Bucksport thermal power stations in Maine. The deal will be completed after all approvals and authorization procedures have been complete.

JERA will pursue decarbonization paths for the plants. The company stated in a statement that it plans to use low-carbon fuels such as biofuels or renewable energy, and blend hydrogen in gas turbines.

JERA (a joint venture formed by Chubu Electric Power Co Inc and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc) announced Thursday that it would spend 1.4 trillion yen ($11 Billion) in the next four year to increase overseas assets and reduce carbon emissions. The investment is expected to continue after Russia invades Ukraine.

Russia refers to its actions against Ukraine as “special military operations”.
