PHILADELPHIA – Democratic Party hopes of securing a vital U.S. Senate Seat in Pennsylvania will be weakened by a tall, 6-foot-8-inch-tattooed liberal. This man is a goatee and tattooed liberal.

John Fetterman (52), the state’s lieutenant governor is leading in opinion polls before the Democratic Senate primary on May 17. This shocks political observers who predicted that a tight contest with U.S. Representative Conor Lamb. A moderate party insider believes that Lamb has the best chance against Republicans during November’s general elections.

Democrats have the chance to win a new Senate seat, and stop Republicans winning a majority in this state. The Senate currently is split 50-50. However, Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking voting gives Democrats the majority.

The people don’t need a candidate like the rest. People want someone who is rock and roll, and Fetterman is that rock and rolling,” Ed Rendell, former Governor of Pennsylvania, stated about Fetterman.

Fetterman wears his favourite campaign attire of a hoodie, gym shorts, and is therefore very relatable in rural areas of the state. These are regions that Democrats had mostly given up to Republican supporters under former President Donald Trump.

His skills as a fundraiser are also evident. He is also a strong social media influence with over 420,000 Twitter followers (NYSE:), and a humorous persona. He used this platform recently to slam Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat who blocked the party’s legislative agenda.

Harvard University masters student sports tattoos on both his arms. He also has a list on his right side of all the dates that Braddock, a small community in which he served as mayor between 2006 and 2019.

“I do not look like a typical politician, nor do I look like a typical person. I don’t mean to look scary, it’s just kind of what I have to work with,” Fetterman said in a blog post last year. For this article, he declined to interview him.

Fetterman met Biden in Pittsburgh at the scene of the bridge’s collapse earlier in winter. He wore his signature shorts and hoodie which attracted attention via social media.

His support for progressive policies includes government-run universal medical care, taxing wealthy people to fund the expansion of the social security net and a wide range of other items. To help inflation-stricken consumers, he supports legalizing marijuana.

Lamb, an ex-Marine and former federal prosecutor, is seen by the state party establishment in a more secure position to face Republican nominee Pat Toomey. Lamb has been endorsed heavily by party veterans, while Fetterman is receiving almost no endorsements.

But a statewide poll by Franklin & Marshall College in May had Fetterman up almost 40 points over Lamb, with 22% still undecided.

Lamb tried to portray Fetterman, and his progressive views, as an easy target of any Republican opponent. Lamb’s super PAC dubbed Fetterman a socialist-democratic in the manner of Senator Bernie Sanders. Fetterman however does not refer to himself as such.

The almost $15 million Fetterman has raised to support his campaign is a clear indication of grassroots enthusiasm. According to the Federal Election Commission, 64% of his funds came from donations less than $200. About 12% of Lamb’s $5.7 million raised was from small donors.

CELEBRITY OPONENT

If Fetterman wins the primary, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the celebrity surgeon, could challenge him in the general election. This would make it two candidates against the establishment. Recent polls indicate that Trump-endorsed Oz is slightly ahead of Republican challengers Kathy Barnette, former hedge fund manager David McCormick (NYSE :).

Jared Leopold, an American political consultant, stated that Fetterman presented himself as an “underdog outsider” who speaks about neglected communities.

Fetterman TV ads refer to ghost towns in the state. With the candidate saying that “No one is worthy to be abandoned.”

Leopold noted that Fetterman’s outspoken message was a positive message for Democrats in tough years. Fetterman’s relatable persona helped him bridge the divide between moderate and progressive voters. He has focused his campaign on telling a story, rather than engaging in ideologic fights.

Fetterman has one question: Can he mobilize Black voters? This is a crucial voting bloc that will determine whether Democrat can win statewide in Pennsylvania.

Black leaders as well his contenders have been questioning the 2013 incident in which Fetterman pursued a black jogger using a shotgun, after hearing shots outside of his Braddock home. Fetterman kept the man in his custody until police arrived.

Fetterman said that he believed the person was fleeing from a shooting, but did not know his race or gender at the time. After the shooting, Fetterman said he thought that the individual was fleeing from a shooting and was not aware of his race or gender. He also noted that he had been reelected as Braddock’s mayor. Braddock is a predominantly-Black neighborhood. Christopher Miyares a former jogger who was sentenced to time in prison said that he hoped Fetterman will win the Senate race.

Rendell suggested that Republicans may think Fetterman is easier to defeat than Lamb, because they are able to characterize him as a leftist more easily.

He stated, “But if he thinks it’s going to be easy for them to beat him, they are unfortunately mistaken.”
