(Reuters) – In response to Moscow’s invasion, the West has imposed unprecedented sanctions against Russia and its top businesses and its political and business elite.

These measures have caused a flight of foreign companies, increased the possibility of Russia defaulting its sovereign debt and are likely to cause a severe economic contraction.

Below is an overview of all the major sanctions that affect goods and transport.

ENERGY FLOWS

United States have banned the import of Russian, natural gas, or coal.

Britain announced that Russia would cease buying oil from it by 2022.

Russia’s biggest energy client, the EU has blocked Russian coal imports, but it has not banned oil and gas imports. There has been much debate over the issue of a gradual ban on Russian oil imports.

Germany has removed the Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Germany. It was meant to deliver more Russian natural gas to Germany through the Baltic Sea. The approval process had not been completed when Russia sent troops into Ukraine.

COMPANIES OWNED BY STATES

Russian state-owned enterprises sanctioned Western countries include Aeroflot, Rostec defence company, Sovcomflot shipping company, and other companies linked to Russia’s army.

EXPORTS

A raft of Russian exports have been blocked by the West. This includes any products that were made in other countries using Western technology.

To continue trade with Russia, the United States requires special licenses from the government for firms that want to export semiconductors and computers as well as lasers, GPS tools or other telecommunications equipment.

EU banned the export of cutting-edge technology, including semiconductors and high end software. It also bans some machinery and transport gear.

PLANES, BANKNOTES & HANDBAGS

Europe closed its airspace for Russian airlines. According to Vitaly savelyev (Russian Transport Minister), 78 Russian planes being leased from Russian companies that are located in Russia were seized.

Britain, the EU and USA have placed restrictions on Russian ships at seaports and forbid Russian businesses from providing legal, consulting, or advertising services.

Russia also bans the export of luxury items.

The EU banned Russia from selling, supplying, or exporting euro banknotes. Russian state broadcasters Sputnik, RT, were also removed from the UK and EU airwaves.
