NEW DELHI, Reuters – Two people were arrested by police in New Delhi for violating fire safety regulations after at least 27 victims died from a fire at a building that houses a surveillance camera manufacturing plant.

The four-storey, burning building was located near the railway station in western suburbs. Rescue crews worked over the night to remove it.

The fire started on Friday evening and more than 75 were present in the structure at the time. Eyewitnesses say that some people jumped out of windows in an attempt to save their lives. Firefighters broke the glass to rescue them with ropes.

The fire broke out in the office’s first floor, and quickly spread. In an attempt to find safety violations, the two company owners were both arrested.

Prim Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences. He promised compensation of 200,000 rupees ($2,580).
