REUTERS/David Swanson(Reuters) – A man who was accused of shooting five people and killing a doctor at a California-based Taiwanese-American Church Banquet will face murder charges on Tuesday, according to the Orange County District attorney.
CNN was informed by Todd Spitzer of Orange County District Attorney Todd Chou that the suspect will face five charges of attempted murder as well as four counts for unlawfully possessing an explosive.
Spitzer claimed that the gunman was carrying explosives, Molotov cocktail like devices, 15 full-loaded 9-milimeter ammunition magazines, and two semiautomatic weapons when he traveled to Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods. This is about 45 miles (72 kilometers) southwest of Los Angeles.
Spitzer claimed that Spitzer was certain the suspect had plans to execute all members of the church. Spitzer stated, “It was my belief that the suspect wanted to kill everyone and blow up this church.”
Sheriff’s officers said that up to 40 members of the Taiwanese Presbyterian church from Irvine, California were at a luncheon in honoring the former pastor who was killed during the shooting.
According to authorities, Chou was described as an American citizen, a Las Vegas resident, and a Chinese-born Las Vegas resident. He arrived at the church Sunday morning.
Spitzer stated that the suspect was motivated in part by anti-Taiwan views. Although his family is from China, Spitzer said that he was raised in Taiwan at a time when there was much anti-China sentiment.
He stated, “He was not treated with respect.” “It appears that he harbored this anger throughout his whole childhood and adulthood.”
According to the FBI, it is opening an investigation into hate crime in this case. Spitzer indicated that he might add hate crimes enhancements to the charges. Spitzer will also weigh whether Chou will be seeking the death penalty. Spitzer stated that he understood that California Governor Gavin Newsom had effectively placed a moratorium against capital punishment.
Late Monday, the sheriff’s office issued a statement stating that investigators “determined” that the suspect had been upset by political tensions between China and Taiwan. However, it did not provide any further details.
Barnes stated that Dr. John Cheng (52), was killed in the Laguna Woods shooting. He was wounded when he confronted the gunman. Barnes also credited Cheng’s bravery for preventing further deaths.
Chou was subdued by other congregation members, including a pastor. They were able to defeat him and tie him with an electric cord. He was held until the arrival of sheriff’s deputy and the breaking through of the door chains.
The sheriff’s deputy said that four of the wounded (four men and one woman aged between 66 and 92) were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
