New York Governor New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday the Division of Human Rights has filed a complaint against AmazonIt is alleged that it discriminates against workers with disabilities and pregnant workers at its facilities.

According to the complaint, Amazon additionally allegedly requires pregnant workers and disabled workers to take unpaid leave of absence rather than offering reasonable accommodation.

According to the state, Amazon is accused of failing to provide reasonable accommodation for workers in its facilities. One instance involved a pregnant worker who was allowed to lift packages of 25 pounds. However, the manager did not agree to the arrangement, so the worker continued lifting heavier items.

Amazon refused to provide additional accommodation for the injured worker and the workers were then placed on unpaid indefinite leave, the complaint claims.

According to the division, Amazon does not provide reasonable accommodation because managers can override suggestions made by “Accommodation Consultants”, whose job is to recommend and evaluate accommodations.

Amazon’s behavior is a violation of the law, according to investigators Human Rights LawThis law, prohibiting discrimination in the workplace against women who are disabled or pregnant, is also known as the ‘Act of God’.

The group is asking Amazon to pay civil penalties and fines to New York, cease discriminatory behavior, and to adopt non-discriminatory policies regarding requests for accommodation.

Amazon’s past labor practices including the treatment of pregnant workers have been criticised. Amazon’s warehouse workers have brought lawsuits against the company. They claimed they were not accommodated once they had become pregnant. Then, Amazon fired them because they did not meet its performance standards. according to CNET.

In September last year, there were six U.S. senators wroteThe Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was contacted to request that they investigate “a concerning pattern of mistreatment for pregnant employees” in Amazon warehouses.

Amazon representatives did not immediately reply to my request for comment.
