(Reuters] – Three Asian hairdressers in Dallas were shot by a man last week. He is now facing further charges.

The Dallas Police Department subsequently charged Jeremy Smith (36) with 4 more charges of aggravated attack with a deadly instrument, giving a total of 7 charges.

As of Wednesday morning, jail records showed that Smith had a bond of $300,000. According to court records, Smith was not allowed court-appointed counsel following his Tuesday arrest. As of Wednesday, it was unclear if Smith had retained legal counsel.

Federal hate crime investigations have been opened by the FBI and other federal agencies into this incident. Eddie Garcia, Chief of Dallas Police said Tuesday that Smith could be charged with state hate crimes by state prosecutors.

Garcia called the attack a hate crime. Smith said Smith was delusional about Asian people since his involvement in a car accident two years back.

According to authorities, Smith opened fire on three Korean-American women last Wednesday by armed himself with a rifle of 22 caliber. None sustained serious injuries.

Dallas police stated that four other persons who had been at the salon when the shooting occurred were uninjured.

The suspect was found in a minivan of red color. The police said they are still trying to find out if the shooting at the hair salon was connected to other incidents which targeted Asian businesses. Unidentified suspect drove a red car to those locations.

Texas’ shooting at one of the largest Korean American neighborhoods in the nation, echoing last year’s Atlanta shooting spree which targeted Asian women, creating fear and distrust in the Asian American community.

As some pundits and politicians encourage Americans to blame China, attacks on people of Asian heritage have increased.
