CAPE CANAVERAL FL. (Reuters) – NASA astronauts, officials and NASA engineers on Wednesday announced that Boeing (NYSE 🙂 Co’s Starliner spacecraft is prepared for an uncrewed launch to the International Space Station this week. The long-delayed test mission, which aims to show the aerospace giant it can safely transport humans in space, was delayed.

Boeing’s CST100 Starliner capsule has suffered multiple setbacks over the years. It is a gumdrop-shaped, astronaut-shaped pod. In 2019, software problems prevented the capsule’s first attempt at docking with the station. Nine months more were added to the delay by fuel valve problems last year.

Starliner, which will attempt to launch the rocket to orbit the station at six:54 EDT (2254 GMT), Thursday at NASA Kennedy Space Center, Florida, is scheduled to perform a third attempt. The mission will be without the presence of astronauts. Boeing seeks success in its efforts to get out of the numerous crises it has experienced in the jetliner industry and in other areas within the aerospace and defense business.

Butch Wilmore of NASA, who is likely to be the first astronaut on Starliner’s crewed flight, stated that “We wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for this mission being a success.” “We’re ready. The spacecraft has arrived.

NASA’s chief of space operations, Kathy Lueders stated that NASA has been hard at work to make Starliner a reality. We learned so much from our first uncrewed demonstration (in 2019). “We’re going to learn lots from the second one.”

Boeing’s last-year valve issues prompted them to develop temporary solutions for this week’s mission. Officials from the company said Tuesday that more permanent fixes would be made after the mission. According to Reuters, the issues caused conflict with Starliner’s main supplier Boeing.

Starliner is expected to dock at the space station by Friday. The orbital outpost will be home for four to five days before it returns to Earth. NASA officials warn that Starliner may fly its first astronaut crew in the fall if all goes according to plan, but it could be delayed.

Butch and NASA astronaut Mike Fincke were two of the 44 astronauts in NASA’s current astronaut corps. They had been allocated to the crewed test flight. NASA officials refused to commit two of their astronauts on a flight with an unknown launch date and instead said that the mission would carry at least two out of four Starliner-trained astronauts.

Boeing has been forced to pay $595m in fees since 2019’s capsule crash. This is due to engineering delays and other setbacks. Boeing was involved in the development of the spacecraft with the NASA fixed-price contract worth $4.5 billion. This program aims to supply the U.S. Space Agency with alternate astronauts to fly to the station, along with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
