(Reuters) – Gazprombank has opened accounts for half of the 54 Russian clients (MCX:), Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated on Thursday. Moscow is trying to get its customers to pay in roubles.

After the Polish and Bulgarian governments refused to comply with Russia’s demand for European buyers to pay in Russian roubles, Russia stopped supplies of gas to these countries in April. This raised fears about other nations following Russia’s decision to stop gas supply to them.

Gasum is the Finnish state-owned energy provider and has refused to adopt the new scheme. It said that this week, it was taking its dispute about rouble payments to Gazprom Export to arbitration.

Novak said Thursday at a forum that Russian gas had been purchased by some large companies under the new program and that Moscow will soon be able to determine which of these companies have paid.

Novak stated that gas payments due under major contracts were due. He also revealed information about large companies opening accounts and paying their bills. Novak said this to a forum. In the coming days, we’ll see who has been paid and who refused to pay in rubles.

Nearly all of the EU’s supply contracts with Gazprom involve dollars or euros. Some top Western companies also have accounts at Gazprombank.
