REUTERS/Chris Wattie/File photo(Reuters) – Globalive Capital Inc, a Canadian investment company, announced Thursday that it had partnered with Telus (NYSE) Corp in order to compete for Shaw Communications (NYSE) Inc’s wireless operation Freedom Mobile.
Globalive made the move after Canada’s Antitrust Agency planned to block Rogers Communications Inc’s purchase of Shaw (Calgary-based Shaw) for $16 billion. The reason was that the deal would lower competition within the wireless industry.
We believe, Telus and all of us, that we can be a good partner to Rogers in order for the Shaw merger to be approved. Globalive chairman Anthony Lacavera stated that they are satisfying government concerns about being fourth carriers.
Rogers purchased Shaw in exchange for C$40.50 per Share last year. This was to establish the country’s 2nd-largest telecom provider and compete with rivals like BCE (NYSE:) Inc.
Globalive was reported by The Globe and Mail as having offered Freedom Mobile C$3.75billion (or 2.94billion dollars) in cash.
Rogers also reportedly asked Quebecor (a Montreal-based media and telecom company) to submit a bid for Shaw’s wireless business.
