WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. President Joe Biden could be reunited with the Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as early as next month. CNN, citing several sources, reported Thursday.
Biden administration officials are in talks with the Saudis about arranging a potential in-person meeting while Biden is overseas next month, the report added https://cnn.it/3wsZ25X.
Requests for comment from the White House or Saudi Government’s Media Office were not promptly returned by either party.
Biden’s decision last year to reduce U.S. support of the Saudi-led military operation in Yemen, and to release intelligence that the crown Prince, the de facto ruler of the kingdom, had approved an operation to capture Jamal Khashoggi (who was killed in Turkey in 2018), have strained U.S.-Saudi ties.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, also known as MBS in MBS’ murder, has repeatedly denied that he was involved. A U.S. citizen, the journalist was critical of MBS in opinion columns. The Washington Post team that worked in Istanbul with the crown prince killed him and then dismembered his body.
Biden’s attempt to revive 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal, which U.S. ally in the Gulf claim does not do enough to keep Tehran from developing an atomic weapon, have also caused tensions between the United States’ and world’s biggest oil exporter.
Washington is also trying to get Saudi Arabia to continue to import more oil than the modest increase that it has accepted within the OPEC+ producer group. It has done this to mitigate potential Russian losses due to sanctions imposed by the West for its invasion in Ukraine. Saudi Arabia is refusing to be a side in the Russia-Ukraine dispute.
