(Reuters.) – Ukraine & Poland reached an agreement on Sunday regarding a joint border check and the establishment of a company for shared rail services. The purpose is to facilitate movement and enhance Ukraine’s export capabilities.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, President of Ukraine, and Andrzej Duda (President of Poland) lauded increased cooperation at a Kyiv meeting on Sunday. Duda also offered Warsaw support to the beleaguered neighbor.

Duda said that Ukraine’s Polish-Ukrainian border must unite and not be divided. This was his first speech to the Ukrainian Parliament since Russia invaded on Feb. 24, 2014.

Zelenskiy called joint border customs controls a “revolutionary.”

Zelenskiy stated that “this will significantly accelerate border procedures,” after Duda’s arrival in nightly video.

The majority of Ukrainian refugees who fled war-torn Ukraine have crossed into the European Union via borders in Poland Slovakia Hungary Romania. More than 3 million Ukrainians are granted permission to reside, work, and to claim social insurance payments by Poland.

Oleksander Kubrakov (Ukraine’s Infrastructure Minister) stated that their two neighbors were trying to make it easier for Ukraine to export its goods into the European Union.

Kurbakov also stated that he was working to establish a joint venture railway company in order to boost the Ukrainian economy’s export potential.

Global prices have soared due to the war in Ukraine. Ukraine is one of the largest exporters of corn and wheat.

A total of 25 million tonnes are held in Ukraine. They cannot leave because there is a lack of infrastructure. Ukraine used to be able to export the majority of its goods by seaports. However, since Russia’s invasion in 2014 it is forced to send its exports via small Danube River ports or train.

Zelenskiy said also that the EU might be made easier by the combination of customs control.

He stated, “It also marks the beginning of our integration within the common customs spaces of the European Union.”

In June, the European Commission will release a report on accepting Ukraine’s request to join the EU. This lengthy process is already creating discord within the bloc.
