SACRAMENTO. Calif. (Reuters). Anaheim Mayor John A. Smith resigned Monday following a federal investigation into possible corruption surrounding the sale of Angel Stadium to MLB for $325 million.
Anaheim mayor Harry Sidhu was being pressured to resign after a Federal affidavit that was made public last Wednesday showed that the FBI had begun an investigation into him in connection to the sale of the stadium to Angels owner Arte Moreno’s development company.
Paul Meyer, Sidhu’s lawyer, sent an email to Reuters confirming that Sidhu had resigned, but denied any wrongdoing. Meyer claimed that Sidhu’s only goal was to preserve Anaheim’s Los Angeles Angels Baseball team.
Meyer said that “a fair and thorough investigation will show that Mayor Harry Sidhu was not leaking secret information in order to make a contribution later on.” His unwavering goal was to ensure that the Angels remained in Anaheim from the beginning, so that the vibrant economic and social relationship could continue.
In light of news reports about the investigation, Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General asked that a judge delay the sale. Los Angeles Times reports that the sale, which was originally struck in 2019, was delayed three years because a state agency ruled the land needed to be available for affordable housing.
Anaheim, which is about 350,000 people, lies about 30 minutes southeast of Los Angeles. This city has also been home for the Angels since long, alongside Disneyland and other attractions.
