WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Two of the most prominent Republican lawmakers, Jim Jordan, and Michael Turner wrote Tuesday to FBI Director Christopher Wray to request information on the almost 3.4 million queries that the FBI made to a data base of unconfirmed information.

Late April saw the Office of the Director of National Intelligence revealing that the FBI had nearly doubled the number of queries it received between December 2020 and Nov 2021 compared to the prior year. Some 1.9 Million queries were made in part of the FBI’s investigations into possible foreign attacks on U.S. infrastructure such as power plants.

These queries were directed to a database that contained information under Section 702(FIRST Act), which doesn’t require warrants.

“As Congress continues evaluating the possibility of reauthorization for Section 702, it must have all the information necessary to assess the executive’s use the existing authorities,” said Jordan, the House Judiciary Committee’s top Republican, and Turner the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence’s top Republican.

Jordan and Turner requested Wray to provide a full accounting of approximately 339,053 U.S. person queries and how many preliminary and complete investigations the FBI conducted into U.S. citizens as a direct result.

They also requested more details about the Russian hackers, such as how many victims in America were identified.
