(Reuters) – Russia’s central bank announced Wednesday that it will begin a pilot project with its digital rouble, which is available to real customers and transactions, starting in April 2023. The project would be completed ahead of schedule.

Moscow has been looking at alternative payment methods, both domestically and internationally. Russia is being cut off by Western sanctions. Moscow announced in April that the “digital” Russian rouble would be ready for international payments next year.
