(Reuters) – The Texas shooting that left 19 schoolchildren and 2 teachers dead at a Texas elementary school has rekindled the push for gun safety legislation in America. This country has more guns than people, and has permissive laws regarding firearms more than other countries.

According to the Gun Violence Archive (a non-profit research organization), there have been more than 200 mass shootings in America in 2022. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than 45,000 victims of gun-related injuries (including suicides) died in America in 2020.

Following past mass shootings in America, stringent gun laws were proposed by Congress. However, they were defeated by Republicans, Independents and moderate Democrats.

These are the reactions of other countries to similar shootings.

CANADA

Following the Montreal school shooting that killed 14 women students at Ecole Polytechnique, legislation changed to require safety classes, background checks, and more severe penalties for gun crimes.

Canada banned over 1,500 “assault style” firearms in 2020. This was just a few days after 13 victims were killed by a gunman in Portapique.

According to the University of Washington, Canada has a lower rate of gun homicides than the United States, which is 4.12 per 100,000. This was revealed in an analysis by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

AUSTRALIA

Australia bans semi-automatic rifles, and pumps-action shotguns after a gunman attacked a café in Brisbane. Under a gun amnesty, thousands of illegal firearms were given up and gun owners had to complete a safety course.

According to Reuters, the chance of an Australian being killed by a firearm has fallen from 0.54 per 100,000 in 1996 to 0.15 in 2014. This is a drop of 72 percent.

UNITED KINGDOM 16 children were killed by a gunman in Dunblane in Scotland in 1996. This prompted a campaign which saw Britain adopt the toughest gun laws anywhere in the world. Two years later, the new laws banned civilians’ possession of handguns.

IHME estimates that the UK’s gun-homicide rate is 0.04 per 100,000.

NEW ZEALAND

In the days following the massacre at Christchurch mosques that left 50 dead, New Zealand’s Prime Minister banned assault weapons from being sold. Later, Parliament voted to ban the use and circulation of semi-automatic guns, including parts that turn semi-automatic weapons into firearms and magazines with a specific capacity.

New Zealand was a rare country with firearm-related murders. In 2018, there were 12 and 2021.
