RAMALLAH West Bank (Reuters] – Israeli forces inflicted almost 90 injuries in protests on Friday in the occupied West Bank according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society.
The statement said that at least one Palestinian had been shot in the leg. Other victims sustained injuries from rubber-coated bullets or stungrenades.
An immediate response was not received from the Israeli military to our request for comment.
A statement by the Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Israel’s “repression” and stated that locals protest against expansion of Jewish settlements, as well as confiscation of Palestinian land.
Most of the violence occurred in Huwara on the West Bank, close to Nablus.
Social media posts this week show Israeli soldiers and Jewish colonists tearing down Palestinian flags. Palestinians responded by organizing a march, with flag-waving people, which led to clashes with Israeli forces.
“What is occurring in Huwara constitutes a provocation by the settlers,” Mohammad Abdelhameed of Huwara Council told Reuters. We hang the Palestinian flag as a symbol for our identity, and will continue to do so as long as this land is available.
Although Palestinian flags are not prohibited by Israeli law, soldiers and police regularly take them out of public spaces.
Hamas, an Islamist group in Gaza, has threatened another war if an Israeli flag march is held in Jerusalem’s Old City. It will pass through this Sunday’s Muslim quarter.
