TAOS N.M. (Reuters – New Mexico’s biggest wildfire was started by two U.S. Forest Service fires, the agency claimed on Friday. This prompted the governor of New Mexico to ask for full accountability from the federal government.

Forest Service investigators concluded that Calf Canyon Fire was the result of a burn pile of branches. The agency believed it was over, but the fire was rekindled on April 19. Santa Fe National Forest released a statement.

On April 22, the blaze merged with Hermits Peak Fire. The USFS initiated the controlled burn on April 6. However, the fire was not under control by April 6, according to the previous reports.

This combined fire has destroyed many homes and blazed 312,320 acres (126,319 ha) of mountains forests and valleys.

“The pain and suffering of New Mexicans caused by the actions of the U.S. Forest Service – an agency that is intended to be a steward of our lands – is unfathomable,” New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement.

Lujan.Grisham claimed that the USFS investigation led to the federal government taking complete responsibility for the loss of property and displacement of tens, thousands of people, as well as the state’s millions of dollars caused by the fire.

Debbie Cress (SFNF Supervisor) stated that the Santa Fe National Forest was 100 percent committed to suppressing these fires in the statement.

Fire destroyed more than 40 mile (64km) of Sangre de Cristo mountain forests.
