WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Sunday, the U.S. Justice Department stated that it will examine the response of law enforcement to the shooting at Uvalde school in Texas. The incident left 19 victims and two teachers dead. It also reflects growing frustration over how police did not swiftly confront this gunman.

Uvalde’s law enforcement officers allowed the shooter into Robb Elementary School and remained there for close to an hour. Officers waited in the corridor while panicked children called 911.

According to Texas authorities, the state and county are conducting their own investigations. Anthony Coley, the spokesperson for the Justice Department said that it would conduct a Critical Incident Review of the response of law enforcement to the shooting, at Uvalde’s request.

Coley stated that the goal of the review was to give an impartial account of all law enforcement actions and their responses on that day and identify lessons learned as well as best practices for first responders to prepare and respond to active-shooter events.

Coley said that “The Justice Department shall publish a report with the findings of its review at its conclusion.”
