MILAN, (Reuters) – Electric cars aren’t the only solution to lowering carbon emissions caused by the auto industry, according to the head of the Italian automotive lobby.

Paolo Scudieri (chairman of ANFIA), said that other technologies are possible to help decarbonize the sector and meet the same emissions targets while preserving the know-how in Italy.

Scudieri stated that he meant the “tangible contribution” biofuels and synthetic fuels can make to hydrogen. He also said that the Italian auto industry had already made huge investments in hydrogen.

Many biofuels are synthetic and made from fuels. These e-fuels allow for modified engines that can be used instead of a complete switch to electric vehicle (BEV) in mass quantities.

Scudieri stated that concentrating on BEV technology only, currently dominated in Asia by producers, could put 73,000 Italian jobs at risk. This would be in addition to the approximately 6,000 jobs anticipated to be created through electric mobility.

The addition of around 450 Italian car parts manufacturers, which is a total 2,200 in Italy, could mean that they are out of business. They haven’t yet begun to move production toward electric technology.

For the sector, the European Commission proposed that CO2 emissions be cut by 100% by 2035. This target is part of a larger package of climate policy policies that was launched last year. It would prohibit the sale of new fossil fuel-powered cars in the bloc of 27 countries.

Next week, the European Parliament will debate a variety of climate policies. This includes a plan that would ban all combustion engines cars in Europe by 2035.

Scudieri claimed that the European parliament does not have a consensus position.

“Every vote counts, and I hope that the MEPs vote keeping our country’s interest in mind,” he stated.
