MILAN (Reuters). – Carmaker Stellantis is set to stop production at the Melfi, southern Italy, plant next week. A union representative stated Wednesday that this was due to shortages in various parts including semiconductors.

Marco Lomio of UILM’s local metalworkers union said that the problem was mainly caused by chip shortages.

He said, “Fortunately, the plant has been working regularly throughout May. But when chips don’t ship we simply cannot make cars,” after meeting representatives from the company with local workers.

Stellantis has confirmed that it will close its plant between June 6-11, due to a lack of chips. A spokesperson for the carmaker said this to Reuters.

Lomio, UILM’s director, said that the new strike, which will affect almost all Melfi’s over 7,000 employees, also adds on to a holiday time already set for the majority of Stellantis’ operations throughout the country, starting Thursday with Italy’s Republic Day.

He stated that the plant would cease operations on Thursday and reopen on Monday, June 13.
