WASHINGTON (Reuters] – A Republican U.S. Representative Liz Cheney said that ongoing attempts to discredit the legitimacy of Donald Trump’s defeat in 2020 elections are threatening the country’s democracy system.

People must be attentive. “People must pay attention and must be attentive,” Cheney stated in an interview on CBS Sunday Morning. This was just days before Congress opens public hearings on its official investigation into the January 6, 2021 assault on Capitol.

Cheney, who was vocal in his criticism of Trump’s actions and voted to impeach the president, is among two Republicans currently serving on the committee. She expressed concerns that Trump’s false claims of widespread fraud resulting in his loss continue to degrade trust and distrust in American democracy.

These allegations have repeatedly been refuted in court, by state and local election officials as well as Trump administration members.

Cheney stated that “it’s an ongoing menace” to undermine confidence in elections. It is very broad. It’s very well-organized. It’s very relaxing.”

A prime-time hearing will be held by the House of Representatives Select Committee on Thursday at 8 PM EDT (00000 GMT June 10). Media reports indicate that it is the first of six public listenings scheduled for June 13, 15, 16 and 21.

Seven Democrats and two Republicans make up the panel. They have spent the most of the year studying the events leading to and driving the attack on Trump’s building by thousands Trump supporters in an unsuccessful bid to block Congress from officially recognising his defeat to Joe Biden, President of the United States.

Cheney used to be the third-most powerful Republican in Washington. After she rejected Trump’s fraudulent claims of the election being stolen, she was removed from her leadership position. Trump supported a Wyoming challenger for Cheney during the August primary.
