(Reuters) – On Monday the Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was preparing big changes in the stock market, which could reshape the way it works, citing individuals familiar with this matter.

According to the report, staff from the SEC began discussing plans with market participants within the last week. On Wednesday, Chairman Gary Gensler planned to outline some potential changes.

Reuters asked the SEC to comment but it did not reply immediately.

According to the WSJ, one suggestion from the SEC staff is for brokerage firms to be forced to place the majority order of investors into auctions that allow trading companies to compete.

The report stated that SEC officials also want to lower the fees brokers can pay to access quotes.
