WASHINGTON (Reuters] – U.S. Treasury Department issued advice to money managers to warn them that Russian securities and debt are not allowed to be purchased under Washington’s sanctions against Moscow. The move further tightens the restrictions placed on the country after its invasion in Ukraine.
A Treasury spokesperson stated that “Consistently with our goal of denying Russia the financial resources necessary to continue its horrific war against Ukraine, Treasury made it clear that U.S. persons cannot make new investments in Russia’s success, including purchases on the secondary marketplace.”
In guidance, the Treasury published Monday that sanctions imposed on Russia by executive orders “prohibit U.S. individuals from buying both existing and new debt and equity securities issued or controlled in part by entities in Russia.”
