Activist group Jana calls on Macy’s to spin off e-commerce biz: report

Activist investor Jana Partners is reportedly encouraging the department store chain Macy’sIn order to obtain a greater valuation, the company will spin-off its ecommerce business.

Jana indicated Wednesday during an investor presentation, that Macy’s online businesses could have a value of around $14 billion if they were to split. Bloomberg reported. Macy’s market value at the moment is $6.9 Billion.

It would be similar to a move made by the high-end retailer of department stores Saks Fifth Avenue, which earlier this year spilt off its digital business into a separate companyThis is. Saks.com received $2 billion in the deal, which is roughly twice its annual revenue.

CNBC reached out to Jana and Macy’s representatives for comments but they did not respond immediately.

Macy’s stock rose almost 4% following the release, erased earlier losses. After doubling in value over the past year, Macy’s stock rose less than 1%.
