NEW YORK (Reuters) – JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:) on Thursday said it would allow others to use its intellectual property in hopes of speeding up the transition to low carbon technology and energy sources.

In a pledge by all, the bank will make several important patents on how efficiently it cools and ventilates its data centers. Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:). Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:) Hewlett Packard Enterprise NYSE (NYSE:) Co.

In April, the pledge was announced and companies shared over 450 patents. This shines light on what technology companies are using in order to lower their carbon footprints.

Banks and major corporations use large data centers as part of their IT infrastructure. These huge data centers consume a lot of energy to cool and ventilate the systems and prevent them from overheating.

Although some businesses, such as JPMorgan, moved certain applications to a cloud service, the majority of financial services firms have continued to depend on their private data centers, which are considered the safest option.

JPMorgan does not disclose information about its data centers. However, in 2012 it was reported that just one of the data centers cost JPMorgan $500 million. Annual technology spending at the bank is approximately $12 billion.

Daryl Wooldridge, the head of intellectual property at the bank, stated that the company had made the patents public to support its commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement.

Wooldridge stated, “Making crucial technology accessible to innovators working on solutions to climate change”
