Hungary PM Orban flags further wage hikes ahead of 2022 election By Reuters

BUDAPEST (Reuters – Hungary will increase nurses’ salaries 21% beginning in January, and plan to raise the monthly minimum wage from 200,000 toints ($644) each month. This was stated by Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday.

Orban faces election in the next year and said that negotiations on raising the minimum wage were continuing. He said that the government would cut taxes for companies if it was willing to raise minimum wage.

He suggested a 10% raise in teacher pay for 2022.

Orban offers voters a number of handouts ahead of tight elections, including a $2 billion income-tax rebate to families and a waiver of the income tax for young workers. Grants are also available for home renovations, extra pension payments, as well as grants.
