(Reuters) – On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that certain alcohol-based products used in hand sanitizers should be stopped by companies following its earlier relaxed guidelines. There is now no shortage.

In March 2020, the FDA issued temporary guidelines to remedy tight supply conditions. This was due to a spike in demand during the coronavirus epidemic.

On Tuesday, the agency removed the guidance. It advised companies to cease manufacturing the sanitizers that were manufactured under temporary guidelines effective Dec. 31, 2018.

According to the agency, “The supply of alcohol-based, hand sanitizers from traditional suppliers has increased in recent months and most consumers and healthcare workers are now able to obtain these products easily.”

The agency stated that hand sanitizers made before December 31st or after this date, and manufactured under temporary guidelines, must be resold to retailers or wholesalers no later than March 31st 2022.

FDA stated that manufacturers who wish to make hand sanitizers for the future after December 31st must follow its manufacturing guidelines.
