REUTERS/Bobby YipPRAGUE, (Reuters) – Peter Kazimir, a member of the European Central Bank governing board and a governor in Slovakia’s central bank, was charged with bribery. However he denied wrongdoing and said he would defend himself.
Kazimir (who was finance minister prior to taking over the post at the central bank in 2019) stated that he did not feel guilty. This statement came after a media report that he was charged.
Slovak news site reported, citing unidentified sources that Kazimir was indicted for alleged corruption of the former head tax administration. This man has been accused in several other cases.
Ondrej Mullarcik, Kazimir’s lawyer, told Reuters that Kazimir has been indicted for bribery. The attorney did not give any additional details.
Kazimir stated that “The truth of the facts is not in the resolution and the reasoning itself lacks supporting evidence.”
“I don’t have any information, I have no knowledge of violating the law and I have never had any interest in any proceeding.”
If they are found guilty or authorities have sufficient evidence, they can be fired from the ECB Governing Council.
The ECB refused to comment.
