Investing.com — Tuesday’s stock market volatility was caused by worries over rising inflation and the earnings season for the third quarter.
With half an hour of trading remaining in the day, the market was flat or slightly down. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ) received a bump last month after it reported that it had sold more China-made cars than any time since its Shanghai factory opened two years back.
The earnings season begins and investors are anticipating comments from CEOs. They expect to hear more about increasing energy costs, supply chain bottlenecks, and the impact of scarce materials. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:) kicks off the big bank earnings on Wednesday.
Reuters reported that analysts expect a 29.6% year-over-year increase in profit for S&P 500 companies in the third quarter, according to IBES data from Refinitiv as of Friday.
There are a number of economic reports this week, as well, including the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s September policy meeting. Investors will be scouring it for hints at the central bank’s thinking on the taper timeline.
Reports on the retail and consumer price movements are also available this week.
Three things could impact the markets in tomorrow’s future:
1. Earnings at JP Morgan
JPMorgan expects to post profit per share at $3 on revenues of $29.86billion for its third quarter. Analysts will be listening to CEO Jamie Dimon’s thoughts on the state of the economy, and the outlook for consumer and business borrowing.
2. Delta earnings
According to Investing.com analysts, Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE:), is expected to post a third quarter profit of 16 Cents and revenue $8.41 billion for the quarter. Since the travel industry is still reeling from the pandemic and analysts are monitoring the company’s performance, they will listen to what it has to say about holiday bookings as well as business travel trends.
3. Prices for consumers
is seen rising by 4% year-on-year in September, unchanged from August’s 4% increment. On a month-on-month basis, it is expected to have risen at a faster clip of 0.2% compared to August’s 0.1%. These data will be available at 8:30 AM ET (1330 GMT).
September consumer prices are expected to have risen by 5.3% year-on-year, the same pace as August’s. On a month-on-month basis also,is seen having risen by the same rate as August’s 0.3%.
