Firefighting crews battle wildfire that threatens Reagan ranch in California By Reuters

(Reuters) – Officials in California said that firefighters took advantage of a weak wind break Wednesday to lift their aircraft and pour retardant onto a rapidly-moving wildfire within a mile of the ranch of Ronald Reagan.

An estimated 1,500 firefighters are responsible for steering the Alisal fire from Reagan Ranch, the site of the former U.S. President.

Madsen stated that there are high winds forecasts tonight and that they’re working to do as much before the storm hits.

Crews also work to prevent a shuttered fire from burning. Exxon Mobil (NYSE: ) Las Flores canyon facility, he said. It didn’t respond immediately to our request for comment.

Madsen reported that the fire, which erupted on Monday 20 miles (32 km northwest) of Santa Barbara in a remote corner of Southern California, is now 13,600 acres (6,500 ha) large and only 5% of its original size.

Madsen stated that winds strong tonight will halt planes dropping fire retardant. But he noted that firefighters had hoped to put out the flames between 15% and 20% within the hour before the wind picks up.

Strong winds caused the Alisal Fire to quickly grow on Tuesday. This resulted in the closure of one section of an important highway and several commuter train lines. California Governor Gavin Newsom stated Wednesday that the state has secured federal funds for 75% reimbursement of state and local costs in fighting the fire.

California will suffer more fire damage this year than the last. California was hit with the worst ever fire season, when nearly 4.2 million acres were set on fire. This area is the same size as Hawaii.
