Retail sales unexpectedly gain in September as consumers keep spending

According to the Census Bureau, consumers spent more in September than anticipated, defying expectations of a slowdown.
The retail sales in the month rose 0.7%, compared to the Dow Jones prediction of a decrease of 0.2%. This figure excludes auto-related sales. It was 0.8% higher than what the Dow Jones forecast.
Sales were 13.9% higher than a year earlier and 15.6% more ex-autos.
