SAN FRANCISCO, (Reuters) – The leader of California’s largest union has been arrested. This was just a day after he was indicted for grand theft and tax fraud.

Alma Hernandez (executive director, SEIU California) and Jose Moscoso, her husband, were arrested on Thursday for allegedly failing to report income amounts of approximately $1.4million between 2014-2018.

Another claim was that Hernandez paid $11,700 to her husband, while she worked on a Democratic State Senator candidate political action committee in 2014.

Moscoso was also accused of not disclosing that his company, which carried out air-duct-cleaning, had many employees. The unreported wages totalled over $300,000.

According to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office’s website, Hernandez was currently being held at The Sacramento County Main Jail. Hernandez is not eligible for bail.

SEIU California reported that Hernandez (42 years old) had resigned as the Union’s leader for eleven years.

Bob Schoonover (president of SEIU California State Council) stated that they were deeply worried about Alma Hernandez’s allegations. “We accept Ms. Hernandez’s resignation and we have fully cooperated and will continue doing so with the authorities.”

Reuters could not reach Hernandez, Moscoso or their attorneys immediately.

Hernandez is charged with two counts each of grand theft and perjury, as well as five counts for filing false income tax returns with the intent to evade. Moscoso wasn’t listed as an inmate on the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office’s web site, and no one answered a request to get more information.

California SEIU members number over 700,000. They work in diverse fields including social workers and janitors.
