(Reuters) – NASA will launch a historic mission called Lucy on Saturday, which will study Jupiter’s Trojan Asteroids. These are two large groups of space rocks believed to be remnants from primordial material that created the outer planets in our solar system.

The capsule contains the probe and is set to take off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, at 5:34 a.m. (0934 GMT). It is being carried high by an Atlas rocket (NYSE (NYSE):) from United Launch Alliance(UAL), a joint venture with Boeing (NYSE):) Co and Lockheed Martin Corp (NYSE:).

Lucy will go into space with a 12-year-long expedition to investigate a record number asteroids. If everything goes according to plan. The first time the Trojans will be explored by Lucy, a swarm of thousands of rocks orbiting the sun. It is one of two missions to investigate the asteroids.

One of the most massive known Trojan asteroids is believed to be 225km (140 mi) in circumference.

Scientists believe Lucy’s fly-by with seven Trojans, which was taken close up by Lucy, will provide new insights into how and why the planets in our solar system were formed 4.5 billion year ago.

NASA stated that the asteroids are believed to contain high levels of carbon compounds. They may also provide insight into Earth’s origin of organic material.

NASA quoted Harold Levison, principal investigator at the Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colorado as saying that “The Trojan Asteroids are remnants from the early stages of our solar system. They effectively represent the fossils for planet formation.”

NASA claims that NASA has never seen a single mission to space explore the sun with as many science missions.

Lucy will fly by an asteroid within the main solar system asteroid belt. It is called DonaldJohanson to honor the NASA team that discovered the fossilized human ancestor Lucy. Named after the Beatles song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, the Lucy fossil, discovered in Ethiopia in 1974.

Lucy the Asteroid Probe will create spaceflight record in an entirely new way. NASA says it will return from outer space three times to Earth to receive gravitational assistance.

To maneuver through space, the probe will make use of rocket thrusters and two round solar arrays that are the same width as a school bus to charge batteries. The instruments in the smaller spacecraft’s central body will be powered by the smaller solar arrays.
