WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States should find 17 U.S. missionaries kidnapped and negotiate with them for their release.

After the missionaries left an orphanage there, Gang members abducted them, CNN reported. CNN also reported on the New York Times that violence had increased in this region since July’s assassination and August’s earthquake.

Reuters couldn’t independently confirm that the reported kidnapping occurred. According to CNN, 14 adult and 3 minor victims were taken, although CNN cited a source within Haiti’s security force. CNN stated that the victims were returning to Titanyen following a visit at the Croix des Bouquets region orphanage.

We need to find out where they are, and then see if we can negotiate – even without having to pay ransom. “Or do what we have to, whether it’s a military or police front,” said Congressman Adam Kinzinger (an Illinois Republican) who is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The Washington Post reported https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/10/17/haiti-american-missionaries-kidnapped that an audio message from the Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministries said “men, women and children” associated with the group were being held by an armed gang.

According to the audio, “The American Embassy and mission field director are trying to figure out what they can do.” Prayers for the repentance of gang members and their faith in Jesus Christ.

A spokesperson from the U.S. State Department stated that the department was not able to confirm the kidnapping and said: “The welfare of U.S. citizens overseas is one of its highest priorities.

Christian Aid Ministries didn’t immediately respond to our request for comment. The Millersburg headquarters in Ohio appeared closed Sunday.
