(Reuters) – On Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard boarded a vessel in Long Beach port that was dragging its anchor near a subsea pipe it found to have caused an oil spillage off Orange County in California.

It released approximately 3,000 barrels (or 126,000 gallons) into the Pacific Ocean. This caused the death of wildlife and blackened the coast. Officials had to close the beaches in the south end of Los Angeles because of the spillage.

The Coast Guard stated that an investigation revealed that MSC DANIT had been involved in anchor-dragging incidents “during heavy weather events” which impacted Long Beach, Los Angeles and other ports in January.

According to the Coast Guard, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (which operates the vessel) and Dordellas Finance Corporation (the ship’s owner) were named as parties of concern in the investigation.

According to Coast Guard, this designation permits companies to have counsel and to cross-examine and question witnesses and to call witnesses relevant to an investigation.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has not yet responded to my request for comment. Dordellas Finance Corporation was not available for comment immediately.

Coast Guard stated that the investigation is continuing and “multiple pipe scenarios”, as well additional vessels, are still being investigated.

Amplify energy (NYSE) – The owner of the pipeline has claimed that it was pulled like a string about 105ft (32m) off where it ought to be.
