REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo(Reuters: Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ) stated Monday that 150,000 seasonal staff will be hired in the United States over the holidays period. The move comes as Amazon.com Inc. prepares for a season of high demand and shortages.
After having increased staffing during the pandemic, the company last year announced 100,000 seasonal positions.
Amazon’s recruitment plan is made during an era of significant labor shortages and increased union activity in the United States. This has resulted in companies raising wages to lure workers to the critical end-of the year shopping period.
Amazon raised its starting hourly wage to $18 last month.
Amazon stated that seasonal positions will offer sign-on bonuses up to $3,000 as well as an extra $3/hour depending on the shift. Arizona, California and Colorado are some of the most popular states for seasonal work.
Macy’s Inc, a department store chain (NYSE:), announced in September plans to employ approximately 76,000 workers during the holiday season. Target Corp (NYSE: ) stated that it will hire 100,000 seasonal employees.
Amazon announced last month that it has begun recruiting for seasonal jobs in the United Kingdom to help with the Christmas season.
