(Reuters) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Thursday that he has appointed an attorney representing former President Donald Trump in a Pennsylvania case challenging his 2020 election.
John Scott, Abbott’s Secretary of state, was briefly Trump’s counsel during a November lawsuit to prevent certification of Pennsylvania’s electoral results. Court records show that Scott quit the case in a matter of days.
This was just one of many lawsuits Trump and his associates filed across the country. They sought to invalidate President Joe Biden’s victory in November by falsely alleging that the election was stolen via widespread voter fraud.
Scott wasn’t mentioned in Abbott’s Texas announcement. Scott’s work over “decades in election law, litigation makes him an ideal candidate” for the position.
Scott didn’t immediately respond to calls seeking comment. Scott was not available for comment when asked by Abbott spokesperson.
Texas Senate must approve the appointment. Scott will be acting as interim secretary until the state legislature meets again in 2023.
Next year’s Texas elections will be overseen by him. Abbott will also be running for reelection. Abbott will be facing two Republican far-right rivals in primary. Both of them have challenged Abbott’s conservatism.
Abbott has moved to the right over recent months. He signed into law, in September, several Republican-backed voting restrictions. In the name of fighting voting fraud.
