USTR Tai says she is optimistic of resolving EU metal tariff dispute -Breaking

BRUSSELS (Reuters), – U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai expressed optimism about resolving a dispute over tariffs for steel and aluminium with the European Union, but stressed that it was also necessary to work together in order to counter overcapacity.

Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, imposed 25% tariffs on steel from Europe and 10% on aluminum from other countries like China, India and Russia.

The European Commission oversees EU trade policies and has agreed to stop a proposed increase in retaliatory duty until December 1st. Formal talks will be held to address excess global capacity, largely centered in China.

After talks with Valdis Dombrovskis, vice president of the European Commission, Tai said that “the conversations are intense.” “Let’s say I’m optimistic.”
