REUTERS/Issei KatoTOKYO, Reuters – Nissan (OTC) has slashed its global production plans for October and Nov by 30% as it battles with a shortage in semiconductors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The business daily reported.
According to the Nikkei, Japan’s carmaker informed its suppliers it would build 583,00 cars in the next two months. It did not say where the information was obtained.
A spokesperson for Nissan stated that “we acknowledge that the semiconductor shortage is still in an difficult situation”, but declined to comment about the reported reduction. She added that the company would provide an update on its earnings results when they release them next month.
Nissan was forced to cut production, just like many other carmakers. This despite strong demand from key markets including China, the United States, and China. Both component supplier output has been reduced and electronic device demand has increased, resulting in a pandemic that has stifled production.
Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:) Corp announced a 15% reduction in its November production, after a decrease in global production in October and September due to a slowerdown in component plant operations in Malaysian and Vietnam.
