WASHINGTON (Reuters), – On Thursday, President Joe Biden stated that the United States needed to “fundamentally change” the Senate filibuster over “certain topics” in light of increasing demands from Democrats and activists for action on voting rights legislation.

The filibuster requires 60 of 100 U.S. senators https://www.reuters.com/world/us/what-is-us-senate-filibuster-why-is-everyone-talking-about-it-2021-10-06 to agree on most legislation, a hurdle that has left the Democratic party powerless on key social issues given their narrow majority. After Republicans passed numerous state laws, Democrats have been pushing for an exemption to a bill governing voting rights. This is a result of the fact that many Democrats believe these bills could be restrictive and unfairly affect voting rights.

Biden stated that “We are going to have to get to the point when we fundamentally change the filibuster.”

Democrats have grown to support the alteration of the rule as a dissident Republican party unite around a plan for Biden to block Congress’ agenda by opposing his appointments and fiscal measures, which often get bipartisan support.

Biden claimed that the idea that Republican friends are saying that the country will default on its national debt is because of their filibustering and they need to have 10 Republicans support it was the most absurd thing he had ever heard.

Biden, who is also a senator from the past, previously expressed reservations about changing or abolishing filibuster. Biden suggested that he would be open to it in the debate over raising the debt ceiling.

This administration has proposed several filibuster reforms that may be able to stop the ban. They include an exclusion for voting rights legislation, restricting the number of filibusters on any particular bill or forcing filibusters who are waging filibusters not to be allowed to speak on the Senate’s floor until they relent.

According to someone familiar with the matter, Biden suggested privately to some top legislators in recent weeks that he may be open to talking about the topic once his social-spending and infrastructure bills are passed.

On Wednesday, Senate Democrats tried to advance https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-senate-republicans-poised-stop-democrats-voting-rights-bill-2021-10-20 a voting rights bill aimed at thwarting restrictive new voting laws enacted in Republican-led states. Republican lawmakers blocked the vote that would have allowed debate to start on this measure.
