Doctors warn of crisis as officials reject restrictions

LONDON — An increasing number of doctors in the U.K. are warning that the country, and its health service, are facing a renewed health crisis due to rampant Covid-19 infections and a rising number of hospitalizations and deaths.
The warnings, from several big British medical bodies over the last couple of days, come as government officials have insisted that more restrictions on public life are not yet necessary, despite Health Secretary Sajid Javid warning Wednesday that Covid cases could reach 100,000 a dayWe enter winter.

“Incredibly worrying”
British Medical Association attacked the government’s optimistic perspective. Wednesday, they stated that Javid wasn’t, according to their view, willing to immediately take action to save people and protect the NHS.
“Especially now that we are entering winter, when NHS is in charge of the largest backlog, with an exhausted and depleted workforce, it’s especially important.” it added in a statementThis is echoed in numerous reports from exhausted frontline healthcare staff.

BMA supports calls by NHS Confederation, which represents organisations across U.K.’s health care sector, earlier this week to the government for its “Plan B”, which it stated last month would trigger if Covid cases threaten to significantly impact the service’s functioning.

Over the last week, between 40,000-50,000 daily new infections have been recorded in the U.K. The number of deaths and hospitalizations is still far lower than in previous pandemics thanks to Covid vaccinations. However, data indicates that these numbers are rising.

The government is denying that the service will be able to handle any concerns. “We are well aware of how quickly those numbers can increase, and that is why we look at this day-by–day, hourby-hour. However, at the moment we are able to manage it,” he stated.
Experts disagree with this assessment and suggest that it could prove to be more damaging than the evidence suggests.
“The UK is really in trouble”
U.K.’s Zoe Covid Study (which collects and analyzes Covid data, with King’s College London), estimated that there are more daily positive test results than the government suggests. Based on data from PCR and LFT (lateralflow test), the data indicated that there were an average of 81,823 daily symptoms. This data was derived on data collected up to five days prior. This is 17% more than the 69,993 daily new cases that were reported last week.

Mackie pointed out that the U.K. had 45 million fully-vaccinated people at the beginning of October. However, by Oct. 19, 45.4 million were fully vaccinated. This is a decrease of 27,600 per day over the last few weeks. His statement stated that “the main vaccination program has effectively stopped.”
Spector said that the two primary reasons for January peaks in cases are “the flagging U.K. vaccine program… and lifting all restrictions too soon.”
According to him, the government should encourage those who aren’t vaccinated to get shots and to introduce “simple” measures such as wearing masks in public transport, in poorly ventilated places and on public transportation. He also suggested that the government avoid large indoor gatherings, work from home, and use masks when possible.
Doing nothing will make things worse. The pandemic continues, even though some may prefer to bury their heads in sand. However, Covid-19, as well as its latest variants, has other plans.
