BERLIN, (Reuters) – German automobilemaker BMW’s first production-ready battery electric i4 model has been rolled off the lines at Munich’s main plant. The move comes as BMW seeks to expand its electric product range under increasing industry pressures to lower emissions.

The company stated that the car was manufactured on the same line as internal combustion engines (ICE (NYSE):) and hybrid models like the BMW 3 Series Sedan or Touring. It took 200 million euros to make the shift, which involved a $233 million investment in production structures.

The automaker has already started a similar mix assembly line at its Dingolfing facility, where the BMW iX and hybrid ICE models are produced.

Milan Nedeljkovic (BMW board member for production) stated that more than 50% of the cars from Munich’s facility would have an electrified drive by 2023. These vehicles will either be fully-electric or hybrid.

BMW has set a goal to have at least half of all new cars sold in the world be electric by 2030. Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW, stated last week that the company is ready with an all-electric product if any country bans ICEs.

Without giving any date or time frame, the automaker promised to cut emissions from the transport logistics plant at Munich (the company’s largest) by zero over the next several years.

The statement stated that this would be accomplished by making more use of rail transport as well as battery-electric trucks for vehicles within and around the facility.
