NEW YORK (Reuters), On Friday, a federal jury convicted Lev Parnas a former associate of Rudy Giuliani of violating U.S. election finance laws in the 2018 cycle.
Parnas, an American-born Ukrainian businessman, and Igor Fruman his former associate were accused of asking for funds from Andrey Muaviev to help candidates in states where they wanted to license cannabis businesses.
Parnas claimed that it was Fruman and he who pleaded guilty to the charges in September, which were true sources of money for a support group for then-President Donald Trump. Prosecutors said.
Parnas was charged for violating Federal laws barring foreigners from contributing in U.S. electoral campaigns.
Because Parnas, a Belarusian citizen and U.S. citizen Fruman were involved in Giuliani’s investigation into Democrat Joe Biden, the trial attracted attention. Trump was denied a second term by Biden, who won the election.
A glimpse at the workings behind political fundraising in America was provided by the Manhattan federal court case.
During Thursday’s closing arguments, assistant U.S. attorney Hagan Scotten stated to the jury: “You saw Muraviev’s wires.” “You could see how the money got to America from the other side. It found its way into American elections where defendants claimed they bought influence.
Parnas defense attorneys countered by stating that Muraviev funds were used for business investments and not campaign contributions and that the pro-Trump group donation was made from Parnas founded company and violated no laws.
Joseph Bondy Parnas attorney described his client, who was a passionate advocate for marijuana legalization, in his closing statement. He claimed that Muraviev funds were used to fund business operations, and not campaign donations.
Muraviev associate Andreykukushkin, who is a Californian resident, was tried with Parnas for his campaign finance violations.
On Friday, the trial was in its final stages.
Giuliani’s attorney stated that Parnas is separate from the probe into whether Trump violated lobbying law while representing him.
Giuliani was a U.S. Prosecutor prior to his election as New York Mayor in 1994. He has never been accused of any crime and denies any wrongdoing.
Fruman, an American citizen, pleaded guilty in Florida to soliciting contributions for political campaigns. His sentencing hearing is set for January 21.
Parnas was charged along with Kukushkin with two counts each of conspiracy to make foreign donations and making the payments. Parnas faced four additional charges, including false statements to Federal Elections Commissions (FEC).
Parnas was also charged by the prosecution with making two payments through a shell corporation to hide that Fruman was actually the source of funds and lying to the FEC.
