Israeli official says reopening of U.S. Palestinian mission in Jerusalem may not happen -Breaking

JERUSALEM (Reuters – Israel’s deputy Foreign Minister stated on Sunday that Biden may withdraw its proposal to reopen a U.S. diplomatic station for Palestinians at Jerusalem. This was after Israel opposed such a move.

Former President Donald Trump’s administration subsumed the Jerusalem consulate into the U.S. Ambassador. The U.S. Embassy moved from Tel Aviv to the city in 2018. This reversed U.S. foreign policy was condemned by Palestinians as well as hailed by Israel.

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary-of State, reiterated Washington’s intention to reopen its consulate in an effort to restore relations with Palestine. He didn’t give any timelines.

Idan Roll, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs told Israel’s Ynet TV: “I think that I have good reasons to think that this will not occur.”

Roll stated that Americans are able to understand political complexity. Roll said, “We have good relations… We don’t believe they will surprise us.” “I don’t believe they will surprise us.”

Israel considers Jerusalem to be its univided capital. It has stated that it will not reopen the consulate. Palestinians are determined to have the east of Jerusalem for their future state.

Israeli officials argue that opening the consulate might weaken Naftali Bennett, the nationist prime minister of Naftali Bennett’s fragile cross-partisan government.
